Washing Machine Tips
Loading
* Although Loading a washer to absolute capacity solves time and energy, overloading also causes inefficiency by not allowing the clothes to properly swish around. Dropping them loosely into the tub instead will greatly enhance the washing machine's cleaning ability. This is particularly true with permanent press in color retention ability.
* Load synthetics to no more than half way and delicates and woolens one 1/3 tub.
* Heavily soiled clothing should be washed in a reduced load size.
* Cleaning is enhanced by mixing large and small items together, and loading the clothes evenly
* Avoiding the placement of large items such as towels on one side and light weight underwear on the other avoiding putting the tub out of balance.
Cold water washing
Cold water washing is adequate for most loads as long as long as the water is at least 70 degrees Fahrenheit with liquid detergent, however powered detergents will need a warm temperature to properly dissolve them. Hot water is normally not necessary unless disinfecting cloth diapers, bedding and whites.
Rinsing
Rinsing can always be in cold water - (it actually helps prevent clothes from wrinkling).
Special care items
* Plastic items: pants, bibs, and vinyl backed items should be washed for only around 4 minutes and then tumbled with no heat in the dryer.
* Woolen items should be soaked in detergent water for 10 to 15 minutes and then go into the normal rinse cycle.
* Flame retardant sleep wear should not be washed with soap, doing so will leave a reside that will interfere with it's flame retardant properties.
Sorting
* Sort the laundry in groups: whites, colored, synthetics, dedicates and woolens.
* Never wash white and colored items together.
* New colored items should be washed separately the first time to avoid color running and continued to till all bleeding of color stops.
* Wash garments that generate lint such as fleece, sweat clothes, and towels separately.
* Separate man made items from natural fibers, (such as cotton), to prevent prevent the oils released from the natural from getting into and causing stains in the man made materials such as polyesters.
* Select a variety of large and small items to allow then to move around more freely during the washing cycle.
Preparation
*Check the label for proper care instructions including water temperature and the cycle to set it at.
* Treat problematic/ resistant stains before washing by rubbing with straight liquid detergent before placing in wash.
* Check all pockets before washing to be sure things like lipstick, lip balm, a stick of gum, crayons, pens, etc.
* Do not allow metal object in laundry including hair clips, pins & safety pins, coins etc.
